Leitrim's famous generosity will be put to the test this year as a target of 70,000 has been set for the Special Olympics Support An Athlete fundraising campaign which was launched last Thursday by Sunday World Crime correspondent Paul Williams. Launched before a packed crowd in The Bush Hotel by Ballinamore native Paul Williams, the Special Olympics Support An Athlete campaign hopes to raise 5 million nationally and 70,000 in Leitrim specifically. At the event, Paul Williams joked "It's a pleasure to be here, to be doing something outside the madness of Tiger kidnappings in Dublin." Thankfully, Leitrim is still a very peaceful place.
"The 2003 World Games in Dublin was an extraordinary event and incredible spectacle in Croke Park. The whole country embraced the Special Olympics and the response makes you proud to be Irish. We in Leitrim are one of the most generous counties in Ireland. I remember doing a story after Live Aid that Leitrim people were the most generous county in Live Aid. Ireland was one of the most generous countries in the world and Leitrim was the most generous county! I believe Leitrim will have no difficulty in raising the 70,000. We might not be the envy of other counties sports wise but I do know that the incredible support, both moral and financially, our county gets is the envy of other counties" he added
