Player Of The Month July 2008
(Monday, 11th August 2008) Ollie Cahill has been named the eircom/Soccer Writers Association of Ireland (SWAI) Player of the Month for July.

The Drogheda midfielder scooped the award on the basis of his performances in Europe, as the Louth men overcame poor league form to perform strongly in the Champions League.

Cahill was central to his club's elimination of Levadia Tallinn where they won both legs, and his equaliser in their first meeting at Dalymount Park proved the turning point of that tie. He also starred in the first leg of what proved to be a narrow aggregate defeat to Dynamo Kiev.

"The European run gave everybody the big lift we needed. It was the first time for the club in the Champions League as well, so I suppose that gave everyone further motivation and helped put a spring in our step. That's the kind of game you want to play in. For me it's probably the highest level of the game that I'll ever get the chance to play in. The games went well for us and it gives you the determination to want to be involved even more," said Cahill.

This year has also marked a change in role for Cahill in Europe, with the more recognised left winger slotting into the middle of a five-man midfield. The Tipperary man relished the experience.

"I suppose it shows a bit of experience that I can play in there a lot more now. I enjoy it, because you get involved and get on the ball more and you know what's needed. You can't be silly in the middle in those European games, you need to do things right and be patient, time your runs when you need to and know when to sit as well."
