Player Of The Month June 2008
(Tuesday, 8th July 2008)Cork City striker Dave Mooney named eircom/Soccer Writers Association of Ireland [SWAI] Player of the Month for June.

The Dubliner has been in prolific form for his new employers following his winter move from Longford Town where he ended last year as Premier Division top scorer despite the teams relegation.

During June, Mooney began the run of unstoppable form which has continued into this month, hitting the target on seven occasions in the Leesiders' four outings.

First came a brace in the remarkable comeback to score a 3-2 success over Derry, before a solitary strike in the FAI Ford Cup against Limerick and a brace in the thrashing of local rivals Cobh Ramblers. Mooney sealed his award winning month with the only two goals in the 2-0 win over UCD.

"What's important is that we're playing well as a team, and myself and John O'Flynn have developed a good partnership which has been important. We have Denis Behan ready to come in and he's in top form as well, which means that we're all hard to mark at the minute", said Mooney.

Mooney feels that the switch to full time training has made a big difference to his development and has been delighted to prove that his exploits with Longford last year were no fluke.

"I've always had confidence that I'd be able to do it. I struggled with injuries earlier on in my career, I was never really able to play four or five games in a row without picking up a knock and missing out but the last two years I haven't struggled at all",

This is the second year in succession that Mooney has picked up a Player of the Month gong, having scooped the honour for his exploits with Longford last August.
