Creating your own web site

Web Builder
Web builder is a page on eircom net's Build Your Own Web Site section that offers you a user-friendly interface for moving information from your personal (local) computer to your web site on eircom net's hosting (remote) computer. It allows you to manage your directory structure, as you do on your personal computer, and transfer files between the two computers.

You prepare content for your web page on your personal computer - whether it's photos, stories, diaries, invitations - and then you long onto eircom net's web builder tool. Web builder will show you all the files and folders that exist on your web account. It will allow you to easily transfer the content you prepared earlier to your web site via easy-to-use "browse" (to find your file on your computer) and "upload" (to transfer the file to your web site) buttons. Web builder also displays file information such as the file size for each document on your web site.

When content becomes obsolete, you can simply select the file in question from the list of files on your web site and click the delete button. Because web builder is a web-based application, you can use it on any computer with Internet access. You don't even have to be at your own computer to upload content to your site. The service is available from any computer with Internet access in Ireland.

Basically, web builder removes the hassle of manually transferring files - which requires some knowledge of server settings and transfer protocols - and negates the need for local software installation.

Introduction to HTML

There is, however, an easier way to convert an ordinary word document to HTML, using software known as a HTML Editor. Examples of these editors are packages like Microsoft FrontPage and MacroMedia Dreamweaver.

As you get more confident you may want to add animation and other features to your site. Check out the excellent tutorials on Webmonkey and GIF Animation.
